In a heart-wrenching twist of fate, a health assistant, solely identified as Victoria, tragically took her own life within a medical center in the Surulere area of Lagos state on Sunday, December 31, 2023.

The Surulere Police Division was alerted by the Medical Director of the health center, who reported Victoria’s absence from her duty post on that fateful day.

Concerns deepened when attempts to reach Victoria proved futile, and her phone was discovered ringing within a room on the hospital premises. Alarmed, the medical director sought the assistance of a carpenter to forcibly open the door, unveiling the lifeless body of Victoria on the bed.

Upon the arrival of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), a distressing scene unfolded. Various drugs, injections, and syringes were scattered around the deceased, leading investigators to believe that Victoria had used these substances to bring about her own demise, with no apparent signs of physical harm.

This tragic incident has reverberated through the local community, prompting a police inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Victoria’s suicide. The presence of drugs and syringes raises questions about her mental well-being and the challenges she might have been grappling with.

As the community grieves the loss of the health assistant, a collective call for heightened awareness and support for mental health issues among healthcare professionals has emerged.

This tragedy underscores the pressing need for comprehensive mental health programs within medical institutions, emphasizing the importance of addressing the well-being of those who dedicate their lives to the care of others.
