The world’s fattest cat has unfortunately died just weeks after visiting a feline fat camp to lose weight.
Crumbs previously weighed over 38 pounds due to a poor diet of biscuits and soup, making him larger than a little toddler at his heaviest.
The flabby cat, named Kroshik in his native Russia, was placed under special care at a veterinarian diet center in Perm to help him lose weight.
However, medics claim he suddenly grew ill overnight on Saturday and died mere hours later. His death was announced on social media through a touching post according to The Sun.
It said: “Kroshik passed away last night. This news echoes with a ringing emptiness in the heart. “Yesterday Kroshik suddenly became ill. He began to choke.
“Until that moment, the doctors had never noticed signs of shortness of breath in him. We acted immediately – in half an hour Kroshik was already in the oxygen chamber.
“Gradually, his condition began to deteriorate and even the resuscitation efforts of the doctors could not help him. “Dying, he was not alone. Until his very last breath, the best doctors fought for his life.”
Crumbs’ cause of death has yet to be determined, however vets stated that he had “multiple growths in the spleen and metastases in other internal organs”.
Animal rescuers discovered Crumbs, so named because of his capacity to suck up all food crumbs, residing in the hospital basement in Perm.
He’d been living on biscuits and soup provided by well-meaning rescuers.
It’s believed he found his way to the basement after being abandoned by his owners.
Originally called “too big to walk,” the monstrous moggy lost 2.2 pounds in just a few weeks on his diet plan.
Clinic veterinarians informed local media that his weight loss regimen was designed to help him eliminate extra fluid and increasing his physical activity.
It included hydrotherapy, massage and stretching up to four times a week. In a statement, the cat’s heartbroken caretakers said that despite their hard work, “sometimes miracles do not happen.”
“Sometimes even the strongest cats cannot cope. Sometimes even the best doctors, rehabilitation centers and support from people around the world are not able to help,” they said. “Thank you for being and staying with Kroshik until his very last breath. Thank you for being the reason why Kroshik believed in good people.”
Despite the impressive weight loss journey, Crumbs was caught trying to escape the centre last month. During his escape, the cat got stuck in a shoe rack with his belly hanging out.
The giant cat became a worldwide celebrity for its sheer size over the past years with thousands keeping up with Crumbs’ recovery.
