Let’s talk about runny nose.
A runny nose is mucus being discharged out of the nose which leads to watery secretions that drip from your nose and sometimes also drip down the back of your throat.
A runny nose can occur with or without nasal congestion, also known as a stuffy nose. .It can be caused by colder outdoor temperatures, or by the cold, flu, or allergies.
Below are some treatment of a runny nose whose benefits have not been substantiated by science and which, for the most part, are taken from popular culture.
Therefore, while in some people they produce a feeling of relief, in others they may have no effect.
1. Facial steam
Facial steam can help loosen mucus and relieve your runny nose.
PREPARATION
- Heat water in a clean pot — DON’T let it reach a boil.
USAGE
- Place your face about 8 to 12 inches above the steam for about 5 minutes at a time. Don’t let your face touch the water.
- Close your eyes and take deep breaths through your nose. Take breaks if your face gets too hot.
- Blow your nose afterward to get rid of mucus.
- Repeat the process 2 or 3 times a day if you still have symptoms.
2. Facial steam no.2
This remedy is desired for those who desired to add oils to the above method.
INGREDIENTS (Just one)
- Peppermint, Pine, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Sage, Spearmint, Tea tree and thyme essential oils are great options.
Don’t worry if you don’t have these essential oils, you can use these herbs in dried form to make your facial steam into a herbal tea and inhale the vapors — you’ll get the same benefits.
PREPARATION
- Just add about 2 drops per ounce of the decongestant essential oils to your facial steam water.
3. Orange zest, vinegar and honey
This remedy stands out for its high vitamin C content. Vitamin C plays an important role in strengthening the immune system and preventing infections.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 orange for its peel
- 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar
- 5 tablespoons of honey
PREPATION
- Cut the orange zest into several strips and cover them with apple cider vinegar. Let them dry well and cook them over low heat with honey.
- After 3 or 5 minutes, remove them from the heat.
DOSAGE
Eat the peels with honey before going to bed.
4. Onion water
Another traditional remedy that might be helpful for a runny nose is onion water.
A study published in 2012 determined that, like garlic, onion has immune-boosting properties that may be useful in increasing defenses against pathogens that cause infection.
Onion remedies have historically been used in natural medicine as adjuvants to reduce congestion and runny nose.
INGREDIENTS
- ½ onion
- 1 cup of water
PREPARATION
Cut the onion and put them in a cup of hot water. Cover the drink, let it stand for 5 minutes and then strain.
USAGE
Drink onion water 2 or 3 times a day.
