Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen and inflamed veins located in the lower part of the rectum or around the anus. They can develop when the veins in this area become stretched and irritated, often due to increased pressure caused by various factors.

Hemorrhoids can be classified into two main types:

  1. Internal Hemorrhoids: These are located inside the rectum and usually do not cause pain. They may bleed, often leading to bright red blood in the stool or on toilet paper.
  2. External Hemorrhoids: These are located under the skin around the anus. They can be painful and may cause itching, discomfort, or bleeding.

Common causes and risk factors for hemorrhoids include:

  • Chronic coughing
  • Low-fiber diet
  • Genetics (a family history of hemorrhoids)

Treatment for hemorrhoids varies depending on the severity and symptoms. Mild cases can often be managed with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications.

These changes may include increasing fiber intake, drinking plenty of water, avoiding prolonged sitting, and practicing good hygiene.

Signs of hemorrhoids encompass:

  • Burning, itching, or discomfort in the anal region.
  • Bleeding and mild pain during bowel movements.
  • A sensation of rectal swelling.
  • Discharge of mucus from the anus.
