Dasha’s rise to stardom following her hit single Austin has brought her both success and challenges, particularly when it comes to managing her mental health.
Dasha, born with her legal name Anna Dasha Novotny, spoke at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards on Thursday, September 26, on how to balance her life in the midst of her newfound fame.
“It’s been up and down these past few months, I have had to learn how to balance my mental health as a human mixed with being an artist,” she told PEOPLE exclusively.
The 24-year-old singer emphasized the importance of making time for personal hobbies, such as playing pickleball and riding horses, activities that help her recharge. She explained that taking care of her well-being is just as crucial for maintaining her career as writing songs.
Dasha also highlighted the significance of prioritizing her mental, physical, and emotional health. “I’ve learned that you’re still a person at the end of the day. You can’t let yourself get lost in the image,” she said, emphasizing the importance of staying grounded.

Despite the demands of her busy schedule, Dasha expressed her gratitude for her career’s upward trajectory. Describing her experience at the awards show as “surreal,” she reflected on how far she’s come in just a year.
“Honestly, a year ago, if you told me that I’d be standing at the Opry attending the People’s Choice [Country] Awards with five nominations under my belt, I would tell you that you’re lying to me. I’m just so grateful to the country community and to all the fans here,” she said.
Dasha has been recognized with nominations for best new artist, best female song, best music video, and song of the year for Austin.
In a previous interview with PEOPLE, she revealed how writing Austin helped her process personal struggles, explaining that the song came together with ease during a session with guitarist Adam Windler.
